It would almost be funny if it was not so sad. Days after the nationalization of Fannie and Freddie, we are now witnessing the nationalization of AIG as the federal government steps in to take over one of the world's largest insurers with $85 billion of taxpayer funds. This is another fine example of what Ludwig von Mises pointed out in the early 20th century - government intervention leads to more government intervention and middle of the road policies lead to socialism. With housing and insurance mostly socialized, America is now competing with those European-style socialist nations who enjoy tremendous tax rates, a stagnant economy, and complete dependence on government. Even the Canadians are beginning to bash the US for being more socialist than they are!
Those who still plan on voting Republican this year should notice that this is all taking place under a Republican president. Is there really a dimes worth of difference between either party? Can you imagine anyone expanding the size of the federal government any more than the Republicans have over the past 8 years? If you still believe the libertarian-ish Republican rhetoric of small government and low taxes, then you are getting ready to be fooled once again. John McCain is an obvious big government Republicrat. He and Obama both agree on a $3.1 trillion budget, they both love the Federal Reserve, and they both cheer on these government bailouts. It might just be time to take a stand and vote on principle rather than placing a bet on the horse race over personalities. I myself will be voting 3rd party and most likely for the Constitution Party's candidate, Chuck Baldwin.
